Following the mixed critical reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC Comics had to make sure their next film would be a hit to rival with Marvel Studios. However, this Summer’s Suicide Squad has proved to be quite a let down to say the least.
We got a year of exciting teasers, rumours of Jared Leto going too far in his method acting, and yet we ended up with 90 minutes of random clips, reminiscent of MTV’s golden age of music videos. The film even pissed off South African Rave band Die Antwoord for stealing their visual style. Two brothers also sued the film for false advertising.
Now, after taking on Sherlock and The Nightmare Before Christmas, Screen Junkies are back with their infamous Honest Trailers to take down the “Worst. Heroes. Ever.”
“Two hours of characters trying to look cool”
Always on point, this Honest Trailer shows no mercy for the DC Comics film and pokes fun at everything it got wrong. It highlights how crucial the film was since it came right after Batman v Superman, but also mentions its chaotic production, alluding to numerous re-shoots and the film’s seven different cuts.
The Honest Trailer, like many of us, shows disappointment for the poor treatment of the Suicide Squadcharacters. None the heroes really use their powers. The video particularly focuses on Jared Leto’s Joker, which was teased as brilliant but was barely on screen and ended up being a weird mix of James Franco in Spring Breakers, Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura and a purring cat.
As usual, the parodic trailer also holds a part of truth about the current state of Hollywood. “Like every film in the last 10 years” Suicide Squad‘s final act is set around yet another sky beam, shooting from a major city, surrounded by floating rubble and protected by a CGI army.
