Family, friends, sons and daughters of Ile-Ife have gathered to celebrate the memory of the late immediate past Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse (II), who passed on July 28, 2015 at a London hospital.
It was an emotion-laden event as dignitaries from all over the world gathered at the main hall of the Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Speaking at the occasion, the senior wife of the late Ooni, Olori Ladun Sijuwade, said the Oba was a man who made friends across Nigeria and fought for the unity of the country till the very end.
According to her, apart from his love for his family and poeple, Ooni sijuwade was a classic monarch with great taste of royalty, candour and valour.
Speaking on behalf of the children, Princess Adetokunbo and Aderemi said their father was a monarch who imbibed in them discipline and humility to all irrespective of social, traditional or religious class.
Delivering a lecture titled, ‘Royalty, Ife cultural heritage and Oba Okunade Sijuwade’, the Director of the Natural Steel Museum, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor Adisa Ogunfolakan said the failure of governance in Nigeria is tied to the failure of the country to follow the trend of its history.
Professor Ogunfolakan, therefore, stated that it is time to look inward and involve the traditional institutions in the running of the country.
